This diploma thesis deals with the topic of living in a compact city. It examines present and historical development of Nový Jičín as a whole and also focuses on a selected locality called “Na Valech“, which is located in close proximity to the historical centre in place of the former circular rampart. The aim of the diploma thesis is to complete the compact character of the centre of Nový Jičín with the predominant residential function responding to current housing requirements. As a matter of course, there are also objects and spaces for rent and commercial use. Unlike the expansion of the city to the surrounding countryside or the eventual migration of the inhabitants to nearby neighbourhoods (with all the negative effects of suburbanisation), this diploma thesis offers a view of the possibilities of quality housing in the centres of historical towns and serves as a positive example of sustainable development of Nový Jičín or another compact city of a similar character.
