Abstract

Mining activity in the Ostrava region has been going on for many decades since the 19th century. Within these activities, there were built dumps, where carbon dioxide was callected together with other municipal or industrial waste. In the past, it was not possible to sort out this gangue perfectly, so it was kept it the dump and large amount of coal component susceptible to spontaneous combustion remained there. The spontaneous combustion of the dumps does not endanger only the dumps themselves and their stability, but also the environment and the inhabitants living near these dumps. This work is focused on the Heřmanice dump in Ostrava region and on the study of the presence of selected pollutants, primarily dangerous metals such as chromium, copper, nickel and zinc. These dangerous metals can occur not only in the soil but also in vegetation near the dump and they can endanger their environmental and human health.
