Abstract

LACKOVIČ, Lukáš. Effect of Specific Gravity on Particle Size Distribution Ostrava: VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava, Faculty of Civil Engineering, 2020. 138 p. This bachelor thesis deals with the effect of specific gravity on particle size distribution. To evaluate the particle size distribution of soils, it is necessary to know their specific gravity. The specific gravity varies in a narrow range of values, so it is only offered to estimate it. However, the ČSN EN ISO 17892-4 standard requires laboratory specific determination of soil specific gravity. The main aim of this thesis is to find out what impact the estimating of specific gravity will have on the evaluation of the particle size distribution of real soil samples taken in the vicinity of Ostrava. The bachelor thesis is divided into two main parts, theoretical and practical. Theoretical part is focused on description of methods for determining the specific gravity and particle size distribution of soils and the search values of specific gravity. Practical part describes the laboratory tests of fine-grained soils, which contain more than 65% of the fine fraction, as well as their results. Based on the results of laboratory tests, it can be argued that the specific gravity of fine-grained soils can be estimated if certain criteria are met.
