Abstract

My Bachelor thesis is interested in institutional factors and their impact on economic development of the countries. I further studied the influence of religion and political regime on economic development of Sri Lanka. In the first chapter I describe the Theory of Economic Development and also institutional factors with economic approaches that examine them in basic level. Further, I define the most frequent religions of the world, forms of political regimes, ethnic conflict and its impact on the economy. In the second chapter I look into influence of religion and political regimes on economic development of Sri Lanka considering the impact of selected institutional factors. The third chapter is devoted to economic development of Sri Lanka since 1990 until the present. Institutional factors have the ability to determine the economic efficiency of countries. Religion is an important part of culture and has a large share in shaping traditions and values of society. Political regime applied to the territorial unit of that state affects social and economic welfare of the country and through legislation and regulatory mechanisms political regime regulates the economic activity up to certain point. The combination of these factors is often a cause of conflicts, which have a demonstrable impact on the economic development of countries. In Sri Lanka there is a blending of these indicators and that is the reason why Sri Lanka’s development is very interesting and specific.
