Abstract

This master thesis concerns the topic of public broadcasting and its determining factors. Public service media are highly influenced by the environment which surrounds them and they are also mirror to the social, political and economical situation in the society. For this reason their character may vary among different countries. Political setting, mentality of people, their attitudes and loyalty towards their own country, transparent relationships and structures, all these features form the picture of public service broadcasting system as a whole, its independence and credibility. Citizens of the individual countries should be aware of the fact that public service broadcasters in fact provide a service for them and they are also paid from public sources, whether those are fees or national budget. This thesis covers the theoretical frame of the topic of public broadcasting media, their functions, importance, but also legal and international context which determines the form of public service broadcasting. Multinational institutions such as European Union play a crucial role in the whole process. Theoretical aspects are further applied within the different individual public broadcasting systems. The thesis describes on which principles and particular systems stands the functioning of public service broadcasting in the chosen countries, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands.
