Abstract

The topic of this thesis is public debt in the European Union. The introductory chapter focuses on a theoretical definition of fiscal policy, its functions, goals, means and its specific types. It also describes the state budget, public debt and budget shortfall. In the following part I define public funding in the European Union, particularly the budget and public debt level in the individual states of EU. The final part deals with the economic situation, especially the public debt development in Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy.
