Abstract

Based on five years of his inventorying practice in the Czech Republic, DBU scholarship by federal German Environmental protection agency, participation in many international network project and presentations on conferences the author identifies the hindrances of common inventorying practice in the Czech Rep. and explains the need for objective analysis of available brownfields' databases. Following brownfields definition author uses many photographs to describe types of brownfields, ways of regeneration, and in the Czech Rep. much needed mitigation tools. He gives variety of recommendations stemming from his 'in field' practice. Creating Integrated brownfields indicators the author assembles a tool to analyse and categorize brownfields from data commonly available in databases around the country. The tool applies multi-criterial analysis to assess brownfields' regeneration potential using an integrated brownfields indicator. The integrated indicator is based on six partial indicators, categorizes sites to "A" "B" and "C" categories (Cabernet), enables mutual comparison of sites for example for project evaluation and provides crucial analysis of the area for local, regional and national regeneration schemes, policies and strategies. Author applied the tool onto three various databases (county level) with the aim of comparison of regeneration potential of sites in cites and villages. The work is supported by three case studies on regeneration approaches from Leipzig, Berlin and Votice. The tool is designed mainly for public administration departments supporting brownfields regeneration (especially regions). The work provides a valuable source of information for brownfield students and stakeholders and third parties.
