Abstract
This diploma thesis deals with main international currency. Its objective is to assess the potential of the Chinese yuan to become main international currency and thus take over the role of main international currency from the United States dollar which currently performs this role. Thesis is focused on the most important national currencies in the world economy.
Current position of the People’s Republic of China and the United States of America in the world economy is compared on the basis of selected macroeconomic indicators. Comparison of the mentioned currencies is carried out in three functions which international currency has to perform. These functions are called function of reserve currency, function
of settlement currency and function of storage currency. The Chinese yuan has the potential to become main international currency in terms of economic importance of the People’s Republic of China in the world economy. As regards performing functions of international currency, the Chinese yuan highly lags behind the United States dollar. The rate of use of the Chinese yuan remains very low in international scale. Therefore the Chinese yuan currently does not have in this area the potential to become main international currency.
