Abstract
This dissertation work has investigated and assessed personal workplace accident statistics concerning activities of some mining companies. The workplace safety and health is becoming a highlighted issue; and it is justifiably so. The emergencies imply not only cost identifiable material damage but also loss of
priceless human life.
In 2007, the Council of the European Union initiated an ambitious proposal for reduction of work related personal accidents, which was also approved by the Czech Government under the Resolution No. 920. The principal objective of this resolution was to reduce workplace personal accident rates by 25% (as related to 2006) in the period, 2007-2012.
This dissertation work presents investigation data as regards two opencast mining companies that extract lignite (Doly Bilina) and minerals (Kamenolomy CR s.r.o.).
The personal accident statistics of the both companies were subject of criterion analysis so that the investigation results would be compatible and consequently
comparable with the Annual Report on Workplace Safety of Mining Industries, which is regularly issued by the Czech Occupational Safety Office. The investigation results can also serve as a base for reappraisal of workplace risks
and prospective proposals for preventive action against personal accidents at work.
