Abstract
Title: Investigations on Grey Iron Castings Produced by Various Technologies
This bachelor’s thesis summarizes characteristics of the most used gray cast irons – with lamellar graphite, spheroidal graphite and ADI cast iron and mechanisms of the melt inoculating before casting into a mould. After that comes process description of metal casting into sand mould and iron mould, including the preparation of metal before casting. Analysis of castings used in experimental part of the work brought knowledge about dendritic growth in overcooled points of castings and about the effect of heat treatment on iron mould casting. Hardness measurement in cross section of the casting and chemical composition showed the difference between both used technologies. Heat treatment of sand mould casting brought hardness reduction without significant changes in microstructure of the sample. Final recommendation of the more capable casting technology for this casting ended up positively for the iron mould.
