Abstract

The bachelor thesis deals with determination of heat capacity (“apparent heat capacity”) of two selected real steel grades (steel A and B), which differ mainly in their carbon content, but also in the content of other alloying elements. The theoretical part of the thesis describes general methods for obtaining heat capacities of steels. Both computational options and experimental ones are presented here. The practical part is focused on the description of the process of measuring heat capacities of steels in both solid and liquid phase. The experiment is performed by using the DSC method, which is one of the most common methods for determining thermodynamic properties not only of metal systems. For measuring the high temperature calorimeter Setaram MHTC 96 Line with unique 3D DSC sensor is used. The experiment is supported by theoretical calculations using Thermo‑Calc software. In the last part of the bachelor thesis the results are presented, in which the comparison between theoretically obtained and experimentally measured values is discussed. There is also a comparison between heat capacity values of steel A and steel B.
