Abstract

The aim of this thesis was to study the biosorption of heavy metals Cr (VI), Zn (II), Ni (II), Cd (II) from aqueous solutions with the use of plum stones (Prunus domestica) to assess their possible use as biosorbents of heavy metals in wastewater treatment plants. Different factors affecting the biosorption proces were studied, the study of sorption of particular heavy metals and evaluation of ideal conditions are also included. Chemical and physical characterizations of the sorbent (Plum Stones) is described in the thesis too. Sorbent fractions of 0,5 - 1 mm were activated with hydrochloric acid 0,1 mol /L for 90 min. Based on the study of ideal conditions, ideal pH value was 1, ideal temperature 25 ± 1 °C and sorbent concentration was 4 g per 50 ml of the model solution. When studying multi-metal system, it was found out that the cadmium ions could not be sorbed to the surface of the cell walls of Plum Stones, while the best adsorption capacity was achieved for hexavalent chromium ions in all cases of the multi-metal system study.
