Abstract
The paper deals with the issue of influence of steel production on the environment by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The introductory chapter briefly presents carbon dioxide, the consequences of its increased concentration in the atmosphere, statistical data, and identification of its origin and amount in the production of steel. The second chapter deals with international and national legal regulations on CO2 in metallurgical industry, represents the objectives of reducing emissions and explains the main instruments of EU - emissions trading system and use of best available techniques. The focus of the thesis is the third chapter, which presents methods of reducing emissions, focused on the overview of several new technologies that have been studied in programs such as ULCOS, COURSE 50, POSCO etc. In addition, this part is also devoted to the principle of direct reduction and smelting reduction ironmaking, hydrogen reduction, fuel substitution by biomass and technology of carbon capture and storage.
