Abstract

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate if geographical conditions can influence an economic development of the selected countries. The first part of this thesis focuses on the characteristics of economic development, geographic conditions, and their effect on the economic development since antiquity. The second part contains the review of the empirical studies on the geographical conditions and economic development. The third part deals with comparison of the selected indicators of African Union and OECD countries and application of correlation analysis in African Union countries. Using the data from the World Bank, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The correlation analysis of selected variables showed that natural indicators have no effect (or very weak effect) on the economic level of the selected countries in a present day, unlike the past. The main source of economic growth is primarily technological development and intervention of human activities in the economy.
