Abstract

This bachelor thesis is dealing with the topic living standards in Czechoslovakia at the beginning of the 1950´s. The main goal is to prove that living standards of population was not at good level and most important that it worsened after the currency reform in 1953. This is proved especially in the field of personal consumption. The thesis also contains comparing of particular indicators of living standards with the foreign countries, from the Eastern bloc and also from the West. Education and public health was at the same level as countries from the West. Personal consumption represented the problem and also for example the lack of apartments or unsuitable working conditions. This thesis is divided into three chapters. Overall development since the regime change in 1948 until 1955 is characterized in the first chapter. The thesis is focused on political development but also on the situation in economy or in daily life of citizens. The second chapter contains specific factors of living standards and their development. The most important is personal (wages) and social (education, personal health and apartments) consumption. The thesis also describes the use of free time and its organization. The last chapter analyzes the topic through the journalistic view in four journalistic articles – editorial, interview, survey and review.
