Abstract

Transatlantic alliance and the security of the European continent are linked together since 1949, when the Washington Treaty was signed. The peace building in Europe is the goal since establishing NATO. Cooperation is based on common democratic values - strong transatlantic links in security. In addition to analysis of transatlantic relations, the main aim of this thesis is to assess military potential on both sides of the Atlantic. Right now, when there is a reduction in defence budgets, the issue is urgent. The thesis shows that most European countries are below the required military capabilities and Europe is so dependent on the U.S. security shield in general. Thus a key player in ensuring security in Europe is NATO with the U.S. global influence of the European Union is so far dependent on the use of civilian capabilities in particular. In the thesis, there is an obvious positive attitude towards cooperation of NATO and the EU, or particular countries, that is seen as a necessary condition for ensuring effective security. The method of analysis and comparison, as well as historical and descriptive method in the theoretical part are used in the thesis.
