Abstract
This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the concept of upcycling, a process of transforming old or unused materials and products to increase their value or find new purposes. Upcycling represents a sustainable alternative to traditional recycling and is gaining increasing importance in addressing environmental issues, climate change, and the need to reduce the impact of a consumerist lifestyle.
The thesis explores the historical development of upcycling, current trends, and its applications worldwide, within the European Union, and in the Czech Republic. Emphasis is placed on specific examples of companies and products that successfully utilize this approach, as well as an analysis of subsidy programs supporting upcycling. Furthermore, it identifies the limitations and challenges that hinder the broader development of this concept. The conclusion discusses the future potential of upcycling, its opportunities, and the challenges that need to be overcome to fully harness its possibilities.
The thesis draws on academic sources and provides a comprehensive view of upcycling as a crucial element of the circular economy and a tool for sustainability.
