Abstract
In this work principles of thermo-chemical treatment of steels are described, types of steels suitable for nitriding and last but not least general characteristics of gearboxes of passenger cars. The aim of this work was to find out the cause of the synchronization ring failure in the passenger car gearbox. The cause of failure was investigated by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy any by hardness HV measurement.
