Abstract
This thesis addresses the issue of microplastics in freshwater environments. The theoretical part provides an overview of the definition and characteristics of microplastics, their sources and occurrence, as well as a synthesis of current knowledge on their toxicity to selected aquatic organisms. The experimental part focuses on the assessment of acute toxicity of irregularly shaped microplastics. Toxicity tests were conducted using the green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus. To compare the impact of microplastics in aquatic and terrestrial systems, a root growth inhibition assay was performed on seeds of the dicotyledonous plant Sinapis alba.
