Abstract

This diploma thesis deals with the issue of sustainable development and its application within the European Union, with target to evaluate the fulfilment of the economic, social and environmental objectives set by European Union's Sustainable development strategy.

The first part of the thesis is based on the literature review, and presents the formation and expansion of the concept of sustainable development, its basic pillars and actors dealing with this issue. The next part focuses on the analysis and promotion of sustainable development in the policies and legal framework of the EU and the Member States. The practical part of the work assesses the progress achieved in sustainable development in the EU on the basis of available data from Eurostat and compares the results between Member States.
