Abstract

The diploma thesis deals with the urban and architectural design of a part of the town of Český Krumlov in the U Poráků locality, which is situated in connection with the historic centre of the town and the Vltava River. The proposal addresses the transformation of the existing traffic-dominated and spatially disorganized area into a cultivated urban space with a clear structure, new civic amenities and a stronger connection between the town and the river. The main part of the thesis is the design of four building structures and the adjoining public spaces. The parking garage replaces the existing surface car park and significantly increases parking capacity, while its height and architectural expression respect the visual connections to the historic centre. The new wooden bridge structure across the Vltava River restores an important traffic and pedestrian connection between the locality and the town centre. The café on the water creates a new place for visitors to stay in direct contact with the river and expands the recreational and social potential of the area. The pair of entrance gate buildings adds an information centre, public toilets and a bakery to the locality, while also symbolically defining the transition into the historic core of the town. The proposal emphasizes the sensitive integration of new buildings into the environment of Český Krumlov, working with scale, materiality and visual relationships. The individual buildings are designed as part of one functional and spatially legible whole, which improves traffic service, provides missing facilities for both visitors and local residents, and strengthens the residential and recreational character of the area near the Vltava River.
