Abstract

This thesis is devoted to assessing the impact of chemical composition on the fracture toughness of the material for the manufacture of railway wheels. It deals with all aspects affecting the final value of this characteristic. Fracture toughness test leads to better describe the mechanical properties of the material and for this reason that the material is not considered ideal, but rather allows for the presence of defects in a macroscopic scale. The theoretical part focuses on the factors that may result value of fracture toughness influence. It describes the resulting tension around the already mentioned undesirable defects, conditions and the possibility of further propagation. At the end of theoretical section describes heat treatment of railway wheels and mechanical characteristics authentication method. The practical part is devoted mainly to find dependencies between standard material characteristics and characteristics describing the fracture toughness of the reference material.
