Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe the cooperation between the city and the operator of public transport, further to characterize the operation of transport in the selected city, to focus on the funding of public transport, to suggest a solution for improving the quality of public transport services and to evaluate the overall situation in the chosen area. Transport is firstly described from the general point of view in chapter two. In this chapter one can learn about the basic division of transport, the main laws regulating public transport, means of public transport and its individual lines and characterization of public transport in the cities which provide such transport. The following chapter deals with the general description of how a city and a particular operator of public transport cooperate. The thesis focuses on the city of Ostrava and its public transport company. Both the city and the company are briefly described in this chapter together with the concrete agreement between the city and the company which was signed for the years 2010-2014 and which is therefore still valid. Last chapter provides the outline of the funding of public transport in Ostrava. It shows its costs and profits, the number of transported passengers, the condition of vehicle fleet and the fares. This chapter also presents a plan of the future modernisation of this area, suggests a solution for improving the quality of public transport services and evaluates the overall situation of the public transport in Ostrava.
