Abstract

The thesis is divided into three chapters, whose goal is to characterize the basic aspects of the informal economy, to describe the possibility of measuring the informal economy and analyze the informal economy in selected countries. The first chapter is devoted to basic definitions, which are used for understanding fundamental aspects of the informal economy. The second chapter of the thesis discusses the available methods and possibilities of estimating the size of the shadow economy. In the third chapter is the practical matter of debate size of the shadow economy in selected countries. The key part of the chapter is estimation of size of the shadow economy in the Czech Republic in the years 1993-2012 using the Gutmann method. Attention is then focused on the analysis of the size of the shadow economy in the Visegrad Group countries.
