Abstract

Waste in the construction indrustry has been recognized as one of the main problem due to its negative effect on the Earth. Effective way to reduce increasing amounts of construction waste is represented by recycling which decreases its harmful effect for environment. Potentially toxic construction waste may cause a negative influence mainly on the aquatic ecosystem through release of soluble components during the contact with water. The assessment of the suitability of construction waste for reuse is based on the results of ecotoxicity tests of its water leachate. In semichronic ecotoxicity tests using plants of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and onion (Allium cepa L.) the effect of waste water leachate on root growth inhibition was evaluated and IC50 values were determined. The ecotoxicity was assessed also based on determined values EC50 of acute toxicity tests on tubifex worms (Tubifex tubifex) and daphnia (Daphnia magna).
