Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to evaluate and uncover the reasons for the failures of earth dams, as they often occur in practice. The thesis deals with the characteristics of the failures themselves which, in recent years, have appeared in water projects The thesis contains statistical data on earth dams failures, divided according to the technical and safety categories. Here are some of the most common reasons that led to water project failures, or to their total collapse. It also describes the kinds of measuring equipment and methods that are used in practise for detecting such hidden defects of water projects. The experimental part of the thesis is devoted to repairs and corrective measures after damage to reservoirs, which subsequently led to improvements in their condition. It describes the types of recently completed repairs of dams. These repairs were then used as a proposal for corrective measures in the VN Kletné mathematical model. As has already been mentioned, Kletné reservoir was used for the mathematical model contained in this thesis. A mathematical model for the selected cross-section of the dam was created, which was computed using the finite element method (FEM) in the PLAXIS 2D software. The model assesses the results of the initial state of the dam for two load cases of water levels in the reservoir, and the results of the newly proposed state after the application of corrective measures, also for the two load cases of water level in the reservoir. Throug the carried out research, it was found that the corrective measures proposed meet the desired effect. It can be said that these remedies can also be used for similar cases of failures in the future.
