Abstract
Increasingly strict requirements are being imposed on the Member States of the European Union to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In the road transport sector, one of the methods of achieving these requirements is increasing the share of alternative fuels in the fuel mix. These include natural gas-based fuels, which emit fewer greenhouse gases than conventional crude oil-based fuels. However, the potential of these fuels lies also in their incremental substitution with biomethane-based fuels, which are almost identical in chemical composition to natural gas. Natural gas can be replaced by biomethane without the need to modify infrastructure or vehicle technology. In this paper, the theoretical amount of greenhouse gas emission savings from road transport by replacing natural gas with biomethane is calculated.
