Abstract
In order to assess the distribution of ZnO nanoparticles in the moss Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt, sequential elution technique was applied. Using this technique, both total amount of ZnO in the moss and its surface, extracelular or intracelular location were determined in samples exposed for up to eight weeks to ZnO nanoparticle suspensions of two concentrations (1 a 0,1 g.L-1) using 20 mmol NiCl2 and 1 M HNO3 solutions as extractants. The distribution of elements indicating the state of the cellular membranes (Ca, K, Mg, Na) was also assessed. Accumulation of the nanoparticles was dependent on the exposition time in all the locations; membrane disruption was indicated, most likely caused by drying and not by the exposition of the samples to ZnO nanoparticles. The technique is a suitable addition to the biomonitoring of nanoparticle pollution.
