Abstract

The theoretical approaches to migration are trying to clarify for several years the reasons why people migrate. Except the traditional economic factors of migration, the religious and political „push“ factors are the key participants, too, including the consequences of climate changes. As they found out in Hong Kong and Beijing, another significant factor might be air pollution. Ostrava and its neighbourhood is considered as the area with the most highest air pollution in Europe. The population in Ostrava is still decreasing since the year 1992. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to found out if there is a direct relationship between the quality of environment and the process of emigration from Ostrava. The attention is focused on the employed citizens who successfully acquired the university diploma. The significant threat for the future of Ostrava is so called „brain drain“. This group of people is supposed to be more mobile according to the expected higher income. In this thesis are used the data collected within the analytical part of creation the Strategic plan for the development of Ostrava in years 2017-2023. The respondents had been answering the questions regarding the level of satisfaction and quality of life in Ostrava. The results show up that the employed citizens with the university diploma who are planning to migrate are actually more unsatisfied with the environment than citizens who tend to stay in the city. The quality of the environment was definitely rated as the worst variable. The polluted air might be a significant and potential „push“ factor to migrate from Ostrava.
