Abstract

Tereza Majstríková, Ph.D. Wood has been used as a building material in construction since ancient times. Over time, people have found that wood needs to be protected from biotic or abiotic factors in various ways. Historical methods of protection have gradually evolved into modern protection methods. Coatings are generally used to protect the wooden surface from various external influences that could adversely affect the structural and mechanical characteristics of the wood. At the same time, it is necessary to preserve the favourable aesthetic character of the wood by the coating. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the basic properties of wood are summarized, historical methods of wood protection are mentioned, and above all, modern methods of wood protection are introduced. In the practical part of the thesis, selected coatings will be applied to commonly used wooden species, in which changes in visual, structural and mechanical characteristics are monitored over time.
