Abstract

In this bachelor thesis I will focus on alloying with rare earths and its influence on strength of the magnesium alloys at elevated temperatures. Usage of magnesium alloys in automotive industry is not anything new but in recent years there was an effort to increase number of magnesium components in powertrain. I will describe general properties of magnesium and its alloys, properties of magnesium alloyed with rare earths, the most commonly used methods of production and possible applications of these alloys in Powertrain of conventional automobiles. In experimental part of this thesis I will investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of alloys based on Mg-Zr and Mg-Al-Sc-Zr alloying systems.
