Implementation of BIM processes in the Hutní Projekt Frýdek - Místek (HP FM) organization

Abstract

Hutní Projekt Frýdek-Místek a.s. (HPFM) is a private design, engineering and supply company with a strong background with nearly seventy years of experience in Industrial facilities, treatment plants, Civil infrastructures and supply activities. Many companies in the construction industry are rapidly adopting Building information Modelling (BIM) especially due to Czech republic’s 2027 BIM mandate for public procurement. As a result, HPFM is also under increasing pressure to implement BIM within their organization. The company has selected one digital platform (AspeHub) and set up a new role for a BIM Coordinator; however, they haven’t implemented a working BIM system in place. This research was conducted at HPFM headquarters on March & April 2026, and its mainly based on the interviews with the department heads and the members of the design team, and by reviewing the sixteen internal HPFM documents. Based on the interviews there are mainly six gaps between HPFM’s current practice and the requirements of CSN EN ISO 19650. First, the BIM standards are not incorporated in the company’s documentation procedures. Second, there is currently no Common Data Environment (CDE) in operation, even though AspeHuB has been chosen for that purpose. Third, instead of using shared workspace they still transfer the files via email with the departments, and they have some other platform like Wrench, Next cloud for transferring the files. Fourth, the existing document naming convention does match the standards. Fifth the deliverables from subcontractors are received without a uniform structure. Sixth, although a BIM coordinator role is formally stetted up, but there are no procedures in place to support or operationalize that role. HPFM already has the tools it needs including Navisworks, Revit with IFC capability and AspeHub. It clearly shows that the major gap is not in technology, but in the process and framework needed to connect these tools into a working ISO 19650-compliant system. To address these gaps, this thesis proposes a four-stage implementation plan. First, a naming convention aligned with ISO 19650. Second, configure an AspeHub environment with defined access rights, Third, set up a BIM execution plan template (BEP) for a pilot project. Fourth, IFC export routes are compatible with HPFM’s current software, along with a unified Autodesk Platform configuration that brings together the company’s currently fragmented design environment. The scope of this research is to find the key issues involved and provide proposals and recommendations for the implementation of the BIM.
