Abstract

The first experiments with coal mining in the Ostrava area was probably started in the 18th century of Earl Vaclav Kořensky from Terešov. By this time, coal was used primarily as a source of heat. Real civilization importance of coal, however, revealed only during the Industrial Revolution in the second half 18.century after the invention of the steam engine. Its importance has even increased during the electrification. Currently, coal is still the most important solid fuel and one of the most important sources of electricity. At the beginning of my bachelor´s work is described the history of coal and chemical and technological properties of coal. The main part focuses on different ways of coal preparation and finally describes the importance and use of this important raw material
