Abstract
ŠABATKOVÁ, Barbora. Effect of Drying on the Plastic Limits. Bachelor thesis. Ostrava: VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava, Faculty of Civil Engineering, 2021. 88 pages.
Among the three basic Atterberg consistency limits is the limit of plasticity, which is one of the basic characteristics of cohesive soils. This bachelor thesis deals with the influence of soil drying on the evaluation of moisture content at the plastic limit. The first part of the thesis deals with a theoretical analysis of the issue. The second part describes the practical part which consists of laboratory preparation of twenty soil samples taken in the Moravian-Silesian region and subsequent determination of moisture at the plastic limit on samples dried in a dryer at 105 ° C for 24 hours. According to the standard ČSN EN ISO 17892-12 (November 2018), the test for determining the moisture content at the plastic limit should be performed on the soil in the natural state, and therefore the plasticity limit was determined on samples that were not dried in the dryer. It was found that (a) drying the samples in an oven at 105 ° C will affect the resulting plastic limit values, (b) determining the moisture limit is more sensitive to the sample preparation method than determining the plastic limit moisture, and (c) determining the sample preparation method will affect the classification (ie soil name) of 8 of the 20 soils tested.
