Abstract

Due to new environmental legislation regulating batteries disposal, some processes were developed for the recycling batteries. Biohydrometallurgy is a novel method to ecology recycle discarded batteries, in which microorganisms is used. Recycling of heavy metals from spent Ni-Cd batteries is a problem, because Ni a Cd are toxic and carcinogenic. The aim of this work was study possibilities of Ni-Cd batteries bioleaching by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria. The acid produced in acidifying reactor by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans with Fe2+ ions as the substrate, dissolve materials electrode powder (size of electrode powder was < 0,5 mm). Bioleaching was performed at 28 °C and 34 °C for 28 days. The results showed that the bioleaching efficiency depend on dissolve of electrode material. After 28 days Ni bioleaching efficiency was 93,56 % and Cd bioleaching efficiency was 66,29 %. On the basis of research results it´s possible to predict direct influence of temperature on dissolve of electrode materials.
