Abstract

This diploma thesis is focused on surface plasmon resonance and sensing using the phase detection. In this work, the phase shift between p- and s-polarized waves is measured in the Kretschmann configuration including a birefringent crystal for analytes at different angles of incidence. The SPR structure is composed of a substrate made of glass SF10 with an adhesion layer of chromium and a plasmonic layer of gold deposited on the substrate. A method of spectral interferometry is used in determining the phase shift. Experimental results show that the model characterization of the thin golden layer is not sufficient, therefore a new method of determination of the dielectric function of the golden layer is proposed. Finally, the feasibility of the method is demonstrated in measuring the phase response for two analytes, water and solution of water and ethanol.
