Abstract
The main goal of this thesis is to evaluate the possibility of the euro to become the world's leading currency, and assume the role of the U.S. dollar, which currently plays in the global economy. The first chapter deals with the historical development of the international monetary system that is needed to know in order to understand the current situation and the reason why the U.S. dollar became the world's leading currency. There are analyzed exchange rate regimes as well in the first chapter because the preferences of certain exchange rate regimes were changed with the historical development of the international monetary system. The second chapter deals with the deeper analysis of the U.S. dollar and its role as a leading world currency. It also clarifies the taking over the role of the world's leading currency from the British pound. The third chapter presents a comparison of the development of the euro and U.S. dollar as reserve currency, unit of acount, and international currency. It also compares the U.S. economy and the eurozone in selected indicators. These comparisons are then used to explore the possibility of the euro to become the world's leading currency, given the trends, which have both currencies. Based on these trends, I came to the conclusion that the euro has the potential to become a leading world currency.
