Abstract

Chemical and phase composition of the three steel slags and one granulated blast furnace slag in as received state and in a course of their activation using alkaline water glass (1st set) and in a course of their hydration using distilled water (2nd set) are studied in present thesis. Prepared samples are tested using compressive strength test, as well as by scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Using these methods it is found that alkali-activated granulated blast furnace slag reaches higher values of compressive strength in comparison to steel slags and its structure is mostly amorphous with C-S-H gel as prevailing poorly crystalline phase. Alkali activated steel slags and hydrated steel slags differ significantly from each other by the means of the values of compressive strength which are results of different microstructure. To fulfill the efforts for using of steel slags as a secondary raw material, further investigation of alkali activation process of steel slags followed with detailed characterization of its microstructure and phase composition has to continue in the future.
