Abstract

The aim of the thesis is to find out whether the countries of the South African Development Community are qualified to create a monetary union. Moreover, by means of econometric methods it estimates the model for calculation of the index of optimum currency area for selected countries of the South African Development Community. There was comparison and description also used in the thesis. The first chapter deals with theoretical fundaments of a monetary union and optimum currency area. The second chapter focuses on the South African Development Community and on economic situations of individual member states. The third chapter addresses selected criteria of the theory of optimum currency area and the estimation of the model for calculation of the OCA Index.
