Abstract
Contemporary modern model of dominating predaceous market economy brings about increase in
the ecological changes of the environment which manifest themselves on Earth in a negative way.
These changes can be understood as a consequence of actions in different fields of human activity.
Architects, city planners and urban engineers have to deal, particularly in large cities and
corresponding agglomerations, with changing ratio of size of the area covered with green
vegetation and area covered with buildings and concrete.Nowadays half of the 6 billions of the world population and three quarters of all Europeans live in the cities and city agglomerations.
Land annexation, predominantly for building purposes is mostly irreversible process, which
substantially or completely impedes land to perform its function and belongs, based on the paper
„EU Land Protection Policy“, to one of the most significant processes that are damaging land fund
in its entirety, as the land represents basic component of the environment.
This fact is interrelated to deterioration of living and hygienic conditions of urban population as a
consequence of greenery deprivation, noise level increase, air-borne dust, air pollution, smog, light
pollution, poor drinking water management, high frequency technologies impact, etc.
Historically well known and in certain countries employed to the present time, the roof
revegetation gradually becomes in the Czech Republic, although limited to new buildings, an
instrument to increase the number of green areas and thus to improve the quality of environment in
the cities. It can be regarded as an individual effort out of a broad spectra of possibilities to amend
the current situation or more precisely not to deteriorate existing unfavorable parameters of urban
environment. The doctoral thesis „Green roofs on the apartment dwelling houses“ is focused on assessment of
the potential of greening flat roofs of existing apartment dwelling houses constructed in the panel
technology between 1950-1990. The paper will result in recommendations pertaining the appropriateness or inappropriateness of realization of particular form of flat roof revegetation with regard to the type of appartment
dwelling house and in principles fundamental for further development of the theoretical and practical dimension of this realm.
