Abstract

This bachelor thesis deals with causes of destruction of the piston of a combustion engine of a car that is made of silumin. Silumin is cast aluminium alloy with silicon. From the microstructure analysis, it can be assumed that the piston material is an hypereutectic Al-Si alloy which is common for the production of piston combustion engines. Instead of a piston failure, there was a piston ring area where part of the material was broken. Fractography of fracture area was performed using a scanning electron microscope. An EDX analysis was also performed on the scanning electron microscope to determine the chemical composition of the phases. The microstructure of the piston was observed around the place of the fracture even at the opposite side of the fracture.
