Abstract

The doctoral thesis deals with questions of the coal-bearing Carboniferous of the Upper Silesian Basin, particularly of its Czech part, and Jaklovec Member. General geologic and economic information of the coal-bearing Carboniferous of the Upper Silesian Basin is presented in the first part. The first part also contains an overview of the essential literature related to geology of the Upper Silesian Basin. The next part of the doctoral thesis deals with information about zonation of the Basin. This information is significant for reference in the text and maps of the thesis. The part gives also an overview of chronological progress in Basin structure division, defines connotation of some geological terms used in the thesis and describes present determination of post-erosional boundaries of the Basin. The lithostratigraphical sequence of the Upper Silesian Basin is described in the next part, which is divided into two sections. The first gives a historical conception about lithostratigraphy of entire area of the Upper Silesian Basin and the second is focused on the Jaklovec Member. The most important historical works and their contributions to the lithostratigraphy are mentioned. Spatial analysis of thickness variation of strata units is one of the elementary methods in the facies interpretation and paleogeographic reconstruction of its development. Fundamental parts of the doctoral thesis are focused on evaluation of thickness development of Jaklovec Member and its geological interpretation with respect to other methods of facial analysis, in particular to the development of the sand content and coal- -bearing capacity. Graphic outputs are maps of spatial development of refered parametres appended by lithological-correlation cross sections. Created data collection was essential for final definition about facies development and character of depositional area of Jaklovec Member and for development of coal-bearing Carboniferous of the Upper Silesian Basin too. Definition is mentioned in the final part of the doctor thesis.
