Abstract
With the interest and need for clean coal technologies, research and development is
continuously required, a task impossible without understanding of coal beneficiation and
utilisation principles. Computerisation and availability of better equipment is
overwhelming, but flotation is still a surface chemistry based process in which what is
frequently needed is the use of better reagents, better use of the existing collectors or
optimisation of the conditions under which the process is carried out. While coal fines
were in the past often discarded as tailings, the impact on the environment and the
economic value of this product is currently taken into consideration.
The dissertation deals with research in new pyrolysis based flotation agents for
black-coal slurry flotation. The new collectors are required to be interesting both from the
points of view of economy as well as ecology. The starting material for new flotation agent
production, meeting both the requirements, are primary agricultural residues and next,
various types of mixed waste plastic, tyres and waste rubber, which may be pyrolyzed with
black coal. The objective of the dissertation was either substitution of a commonly applied
collector or reduction of its consumption in flotation through a suitable combination
with pyrolytic oils. Another objective was to obtain suitable marketable black-coal
concentrate with ash content below 10 %.
