Abstract

This diploma thesis focuses on the position of Greece in the EU and on the economic analysis of the country. It deals with the 2008 world´s crisis impact on the greek economy as well. The recency of the main theme itself comes out from a fact, that Greece as the most indebted EU member is being frequently used as a main talking point not only for the european, but also for the international and global discussions in the past two years. The first chapter of this diploma thesis describes formation as well as the evolution of the EC (known as the EU later on) from the sixties to the first decade of the 21st century. The EU position in the world´s economy is also a part of the chapter as well as the scope of the Treaty of Lisbon that is seen as a crucial instrument for the EU competitive advantage increase in the world´s economy. The second chapter gives a particular attention to Greece as such, with its economic and political development before and after the country´s integration in the EU. The most important macro-economic indicators are being analyzed in this chapter as well as the Maastrichts criteria fulfillment which are necessary for meeting the integration demads in terms of the country´s entry in the Euro area. The main theme of the third chapter is the beginning and the progression of the world´s financial and economic crisis, that started in 2008, with its impacts on the greek economy. In regard to the membership of Greece in the EU and in the Euro area, this aspect had to be taken into consideration in the overall analysis. All the passed cost savings and preventive resolutions both initiated by the Greek government and the EU are also introduced in the chapter´s conclusion.
