Abstract
In the past two decades, economic ties between the European Union (EU) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have deepened significantly. This trend highlights the growing importance of both actors in international trade and their efforts to strengthen cooperation. This thesis analyzes and evaluates the development of trade relations between the EU and ASEAN, focusing on trade in goods and services. It uses data from Eurostat, the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index to assess trade concentration, and the Grubel-Lloyd Index to measure the intensity of intra-industry trade. The analysis reveals a significant increase in the volume of trade in goods (2012–2024) and services (2012–2023), with the EU consistently running a trade deficit in goods, particularly in the category of machinery and transport equipment (SITC 07). The COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical shifts have considerably impacted trade flows, with a decline in 2020 followed by recovery. In the services sector, digital and technological services prevail, particularly in response to increasing demand for IT solutions and licenses. The thesis underscores ASEAN’s growing role as a key EU partner in global supply chains.
