Abstract

This bachelor thesis deals with the problem of fatigue damage of steels for railway axles. The theoretical part includes acquaintance with the properties and heat treating steels used to manufacture railway axles. Furthermore, the thesis describes various stages of fatigue process and characterizes types of fatigue life of material. The experimental part is devoted to detection of initiation sites of fatigue damage – corrosion pits. On the basis of the presence of corrosion pits they can be considered as stress concentrators and fatigue crack initiation sites. Their presence has significant negative effect on the railway axles fatigue life.
