Abstract
This thesis deals with the process of bioleaching heavy metals from excess sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and its effect on sludge properties. The aim is to evaluate the potential of the fungus Aspergillus niger for biological metal removal and to determine the optimal conditions for bioleaching in terms of its efficiency and stability. The thesis also includes monitoring the adaptability of the A. niger culture in the municipal sludge environment and evaluating changes in the basic physicochemical and mechanical parameters of the sludge during the process. For example, the effect on pH, sludge dewatering capacity, and reduction of heavy metal concentrations in sludge. The results may contribute to the practical application of bioleaching as an environmentally friendly method of sludge treatment in WWTP operating conditions.
