Abstract

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to create a design for a cast iron manhole cover with a diameter of 330 mm featuring a custom motive. The theoretical part deals with decorative art and its influence on humans, Japanese art, its history and its influence on art outside Japan and design of artistic cast iron. In the practical part, I describe the process of producing the casting itself. This includes making a model, casting the cast iron into a sand mold, surface treatment of the cast iron and the use of enamels for colouring. The resulting casting can serve as a scaled-down design for a cast iron manhole cover.
