Abstract

During the whole history people always try to push the limits of human knowledge and achievements. Civil engineering is no exception to this trend, buildings and structures grow longer, e.g. Weinan Weihe bridge which is approximately 80 km long or world tallest building Burdz Chalifa with height of 828 metres. All these structures use recent advances in material engineering and mainly employ unusual structural systems. Such extreme structures must withstand actions like earthquake or wind in the way that is far beyond that of regular structures because the size increases unfavourable effects in non linear way. One of the unusual ways to secure necessary shear stiffness of the structures may be the newly proposed circular stiffener that is the object of current research. The circular stiffener has many interesting properties; it is able to resist to forces in any direction, i.e. both horizontal and vertical forces. Because it is possible to pre-stress the circular stiffener it is possible to change its behaviour at any time during its lifetime. Due to static indeterminacy of circular stiffener even the failure of several members does not endanger the safety of the whole structure. This new structural element has many interesting properties and therefore it may be applied as shear stiffener of vertical structures.
