Abstract

This thesis, at the beginning, deals with actual theoretical knowledge about coal particle burnout and also fundamental principles of combustion kinetics. It also describes the main factors which influence combustion of pulverized coal and suggests possibilities of solving this issue by using mathematical modeling. The practical part of this work describes methodology to determine pulverized coal thermokinetic properties. It starts with the design and construction of an experimental facility and the creation of new methodology which leads to obtaining the coal burnout curve. It was developed for this purpose of constructing a new unique experimental facility called a Drop tube testing facility (DTTF). The DTTF simulates conditions occurring in a pulverized coal fired boiler by emulating oxygen concentration, temperature, and reaction gas velocity. The experimental part of the thesis contains results of experimental tests and their evaluation. This thesis plays a significant role in a new mathematical model of pulverized coal burnout in the DTTF. This has been defined in code Fluent 12.1. This model was refined by using the results obtained from the experimental tests of the DTTF.
